Extensions: The 411

If you’ve been following along with me on IG, you know by now that I got extensions a few weeks ago. I’ve never had extensions before and was a bit nervous, as I had no idea what they would look like, feel like, etc etc. Would it hurt? Would they look unnatural? Would I absolutely love them?

The truth is, my hair hasn’t been the same ever since I had kids. I’m certainly not the first to experience postpartum hair loss. My daughters were born in 2018, 2019, and 2021 — and it honestly wreaked a special kind of havoc on my hair. I’m not sure if it’s from having all of my girls so close together and my hair couldn’t ever fully recoup, or what it was, but my hair is way thinner than it was prior to having kids and also doesn’t grow nearly as quickly. Perhaps stress has a part to play too, haaa.

Historically I’ve resorted to chopping my hair off when it starts to get to that “stuck” point just below my shoulders. And I truly love short hair — I think a messy bob is super chic and I always feel so good with short hair. However this time around I wanted to do something different and give long hair a shot. Enter Nicole.

I did a lot of research before deciding who to go with for extensions. Living in NYC, the options are endless and a bit overwhelming. I am also naive to the world of extensions, as there are sooooo many methods that I know nothing about.

I came across Nicole while researching extension specialists and was immediately impressed by her work. All of her clients hair looked beautiful and SO natural. We ended up chatting via FaceTime (she was so gracious about how tricky it would be to bring three kids to a salon for a consultation, ha!) and immediately hit it off. I was so happy to hear about how much she prioritizes the longterm integrity and health of your hair. She has experience with all different methods, so I trusted her when it came to her preference being hand tied weft extensions.

One of my favorite things she said to me during our appointment was that getting extensions is “high maintenance to be low maintenance” — and these extensions have been nothing but low maintenance, you guys. I’ve only had to wash + style my hair once a week, and I can pretty much just wake up and go (with the exception of touching up a few curls here and there).

Nicole was not only a joy to work with, but she did an absolutely amazing job. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out — it looks incredibly natural and it’s been such a confidence booster for this tired mom who had gotten stuck in a rut of throwing her hair back in a bun and called it a day. I wear my hair down almost every day now and am having so much fun with these long locks.

If you’ve been curious about extensions and live in NYC, reach out to Nicole and she will set you up with a free consultation to chat about what the process will look like for you. And if you don’t live in NYC, hop on a plane 😉 you can save on your service with the code HEATHERS15, too!

A few questions yall have asked me since I had them done:

Did it hurt having them put in?

Not at ALL.

Are they uncomfortable?

Not at ALL. I was aware of them being there for the first couple of days, but now they just feel like my own hair. I’m totally used to them now. But never uncomfortable!

Are they a pain to wash/style?

Zero percent. I was nervous to wash them the first time, but it was totally easy and doesn’t take any longer than washing my hair before. I do have to blow-dry the top/root of weft so it doesn’t hold moisture (I hardly ever used a blowdryer before having extensions . I just end up blowdrying completely and curling, then I’m pretty much good to go for the rest of the week with a bit of dry shampoo!

Did it take a long time?

She colored my hair beforehand so that it would match the extensions perfectly, so including that it took about 2.5hrs in total. Honestly way faster than I thought!

Are they uncomfortable to sleep in?

It took a bit of getting used to mostly because I was worried I would do something to mess them up in the night, but now those worries are gone and I’m sleeping like a baby. It took a couple of nights to get used to.

Always happy to answer any questions you might have about extensions or booking with Nicole! xx
